A 22-year-old man has been sentenced to more than a year in prison after attempting to steal two televisions from a Peterborough store.
Hamza Siraj entered Currys at Maskew Avenue Retail Park on 22 July but was stopped by staff before he could take the items.
Siraj’s actions violated a five-year criminal behaviour order (CBO) issued in July, following convictions for 22 shoplifting offences and three public order offences. He also breached the CBO by committing thefts at the Co-op in Loxley Centre on 20 and 21 July, and at Tesco in Staniland Way on 22 July.
In total, Siraj admitted to multiple theft offences, including four additional incidents. Cambridge Crown Court sentenced him to 19 months in prison, which included activating a 12-month suspended sentence, on Friday, 26 September.
The court updated the conditions of Siraj’s CBO, which now prohibit him from:
- Entering Maskew Avenue Retail Park
- Visiting any Co-op or Tesco stores in Peterborough
- Entering Morrisons in Lincoln Road, Werrington
- Carrying any type of bag when entering a store
PC Joe Malton, from the Northern Spree Offender Team, said: “Siraj has had a significant impact on businesses across Peterborough, having been convicted of 36 shoplifting-related offences this year. I hope this result and CBO gives reassurance that we are working hard to tackle retail crime.”
